Executive Director
Summary
The New England Ski Museum, a nonprofit organization with locations in Franconia and North Conway, NH, seeks an Executive Director who provides dynamic leadership, fundraising abilities and overall management of the Museum’s mission, programs, and operations. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director develops, refines, and implements strategic plans related to collections, fundraising, exhibitions, education, and community relations in New England.
This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Board of Directors.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
Essential Skills and Experience
- Minimum of five years of experience in a museum, nonprofit, or business environment
- At least three years in a senior management or leadership role
- Familiarity with skiing, the ski industry, and interest in ski history
- Proven ability to provide effective leadership, vision, and strategic direction
- Experience developing and implementing strategic plans and/or business plans
- Strong record of success in fundraising with emphasis on donor relations, sponsorships, grant writing and membership development
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
- Ability to work cooperatively with boards, staff, volunteers, and community partners
- Experience managing and growing an annual operating budget
- Strong business management and financial oversight skills
- Knowledge of professional standards and best practices for museums and nonprofits
- Excellent planning, organizational and time-management skills, and decision-making abilities
- Proficiency with technology including CRM databases, website development and management, POS systems, digitization, social media, and office software
- Experience in building operations and maintenance
- Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings when needed
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and conceptual leadership to advance the Museum’s mission
- Work with the Board of Directors to establish long-range goals and implement strategic initiatives
- Develop concerted fundraising initiatives to increase donations, memberships, corporate sponsorships, grants and event income
- Manage administration, development, finance, technology needs, external communications, programming and staffing
- Oversee Museum Branch Managers and Curator to meet Museum standards and retail goals
- Lead, manage, and support staff, volunteers, and consultants
- Serve as the Museum’s chief spokesperson and advocate
- Build and strengthen community partnerships across New England and with the ski industry
- Direct marketing and public relations initiatives to engage members and visitors
- Develop an effective communications plan to raise the profile of the museum and increase local, statewide, national and international awareness and prominence
- Manage, secure and maintain the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as the collections held in public trust
Working Conditions
The Executive Director must be adaptable and proactive in all aspects of Museum operations, which at times can be unpredictable and fast-paced.
The locations of the Museum branches entail frequently challenging weather conditions. Never-theless, the position requires regular in-person presence at both Museum branches and occasional travel to meetings, conferences, and events. A flexible schedule, including some remote work, is possible.
The Executive Director is expected to be accessible to staff and the Board during the regular work week and responsive in a timely manner.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range is $62,000 – $65,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits and other details to be negotiated. The New England Ski Museum is an equal opportunity employer.
