Norden Ski Club of Ishpeming, MI
These club members personify the Norwegian tradition of the ipper Midwest and New England in the late 19th century. Organized ski jumping was a young tradition in Norway when Scandinavian emigration to the US got underway. The first Norwegian national ski competition took place in 1868. This nordic form of skiing was much more popular and developed in the Midwest than in New England. It wasn't until the 1920s, when downhill skiing began to be practiced, that New England became a factor in skiing.
